History & Heritage Sites

Greene County was established in February of 1796 from Washington County and named for General Nathanael Greene—one of the most trusted generals of the Revolutionary War and Washington's friend and comrade-in-arms.

Greene County boasts many historic sites.  The Greene County Historical Museum is located in a 55-room, 1860’s poor farm house and houses many artifacts and exhibits.
Our first courthouse, an 18th-century log structure, is now home to the Cornerstone Genealogical Society.

The Thomas Hughes House, built in 1814 of hand-cut stone, was a stop on the Underground Railroad.

Chartered in 1850, Waynesburg College (now University) was one of the first colleges in the Commonwealth to confer degrees upon women.

The W.A. Young Foundry has been called “the greatest find of its type in the nation” by the Smithsonian Institute’s curator emeritus.  Built in 1900, this foundry and machine shop cast numerous items from horseshoes to locomotive wheels.

Other offerings include one-room schoolhouses, seven covered bridges, general stores, Civil War monuments, mine memorials, Native American massacre sites, original jailhouses and more.
